A few of the books I've been reading recently.

Max Tivoli. The story is similar to the movie coming out this Christmas, "the Curious Case of Benjamin Button" where the main character is born as an old man and grows younger throughout the book. I especially like it because it is set in San Francisco.

When You are Engulfed in Flames. David Sedaris is always hilarious, this book is no exception. It's best on tape, because the way he reads it makes it twice as funny.

Just the Way You Are. This is a great children's book, I read it to the primary a few weeks ago and 20 kids under the age of 7 gave me their full, undivided attention for 15 minutes.

Posterity. This book is letters of Great Americans to their children on various topics. I love to pick it off the shelf and read one every now and then, I always keep it close at hand. The letters are beautifully written and personal. Ansel Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt, Groucho Marx, Carl Sandburg, John Steinbeck, W. E. B. Du Bois are a few of of the writers included. My favorite is a letter written by William James to his 13 year old daughter.

Here's a exerpt from a letter written by General Pershing (General of the U.S. Armies) to his 8 year-old son, Warren:

"The only thing lacking this morning in making my ride a complete joy was that you were not here to go with me. I often wish you were with me when I see beautiful things as I travel around the country. I would also like to have you with me under all circumstances. I especially miss you at night."

Kelly, your posts are the best! I love your list of books and what you wrote about each one. The comment on the book you read to the primary kids made me smile - AND want to get it for Eli when he's a little older! And I want to listen to the David Sedaris book now too...

P.S. - We really need to have you guys over after my life calms down - we have Ben's parents staying here all of this week, and then I'm out of town next week, but after that, let's do something!
