Ashley lent me this book last week and I just finished it Sunday night. I loved it! It has quite a few similarities to Pride & Prejudice, but explores class struggles and the rise of manufacturing in England vs. the more charming agrarian past. I know for most people it would be a snoozer, but for a victorian sentimentalist like myself, it was a total page turner, I couldn't put it down! I highly recommend it if you're a fan of of the Bronte sisters or Austen, you're sure to love the heroine, Margaret Hale as much as I did. As one reviewer on Amazon.com said, it's a treasure because Elizabeth Gaskell succeeds writing a political novel with a strong love story and good characterization.

If you haven't already, check out the four-hour BBC adaptation of North and South. It's soo good! And it's pretty faithful to the book, too.
I echo what Jen's just said. It's absolutely beautiful and probably the best adaptation the BBC have ever done. Richard Armitage is very easy on the eye too!
For something a bit more lighthearted try also their adaptation of Cranford which is pure magic
Did you know there are movies of all of the North and South books? We loved watching them growing up-I think in all, the movies take 24 hours to watch all of them! Patrick Swayze!
